The Sixth Annual North Okanagan Artists Alternative Members' Juried Exhibition.
This exhibition celebrates the artistic richness of the Okanagan arts scene showcasing what artists, writers and performers consider to be their best and most recent work. All artists, writers, musicians and performers were invited to participate. What resulted was a deluge of paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures, with a total sixty-six works being received. After much deliberation, 31 works were chosen by our juror to create an intriguing and impressive exhibition. Come and view the result and enjoy our community's creative spirit in its many permutations!
Writers, musicians and performers are invited to read or perform at the opening reception on Saturday. March 29 between 7 and 9pm. Please call the gallery @ (250)503-2297 in advance if you would like to be part of the entertainment on opening night.
Juried exhibtions are an important aspect of every exhibiting artist's development. They offer an opportunity for artists to work towards this achievement and to note it when building a Curriculum Vitae. Gallery Vertigo wishes to thank and congratulate all artists who submitted works for this exhibition. Your participation is key to making this a noteworthy juried event.
Thank you to juror Briar Craig. Craig's approach was very considered and professional. Being a juror is never and easy job, and we appreciate his willingness to perform this important function for the artists of the North Okanagan and for Gallery Vertigo. Briar Craig, B.F.A., M.V.A. isHead of the Department of Creative Studies and a member of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna.
Juror's Talk: Sunday April 13th @ 1pm
All artists who participated in this juried exhibition are invited to bring refused works back to the gallery for critique and discussion with our guest, juror Briar Craig. Works on the wall may also be discussed.
The Juror's statement is available for your perusal in the exhibition brochure. Pick up your copy at the gallery.
The Featured Members Wall: Justin Pasieka
Local artist Justin Pasieka has grown increasingly irritated by the changes he has observed around him in the North Okanagan over the past 25 years. The artist has chosen to funnel that agitation into his creative expression which employs a wide variety of mediums. The media he chooses include film and animation, digital and traditional painting and comic books. Pasieka considers the latter to be his "home turf". He is currently involved in an animated film project, is working on a graphic novel and runs several comic strips on his website. The artist also occasionally devotes some time to his electronic music project, Riotfish.
Artist Statement:
In short, history is accelerating uncomfortably, and the future is very uncertain. It is art's challenge to find a place in this murky, shifting landscape. I've found that the best way to approach this dismal modern mess is to take meta-view snapshots of each major problem area.
Dreams are one of my biggest artistic influences, as they are nature's way of summing up complex situations. At the same time, the complexity of the world situation requires a lot of research and studious observation. One has to be balanced with the other, and this is my current artistic struggle. (Justin Pasieka)
The Window Gallery: Helena Valk
This month our "window on the street" features local painter Helena Valk. Fresh, unfettered and joyful could be used to describe this artist's colourful acrylics on canvas. Passersby are sure to be intrigued and are bound to linger at the corner of 30th Avenue and 31st Street in downtown Vernon for a hit of colour and an inspiring moment or two.
Artist Statement:
I have lived in BC for about 18 years in Kitimat, Revelstoke and Vernon. The Okanagan is beautiful and inspiring. I am an untrained artist and love to just let my paintings evolve with no planning. Having worked most of my life in the clerical field it is now great to be free and express myself in this way. Colour and shapes in an unstructured whimsical composition reflect my personality and sense of freedom.
I find it is better for me not to get too much advice or direction or to try to copy another artist's style and just be myself. (Helena Valk)

Sveva - Prisoner of Vernon - A film by Jim Elderton
This fascinating story spans 80 years in the extraordinary life of one of Vernon's most famous residents.
The film brings together the many facets of Sveva Caetani's life; interviews with her friends and colleagues, the huge collection of artifacts and photos, period film footage, her artwork, and her own writings.
This remarkable film by Vernon’s award-winning filmmaker Jim Elderton (THE HYDERABAD SOLUTION and CAROLINE’S ROCK), treats this heart-breaking yet heart-warming story with a gentle greatness that brings Sveva to the Canadian centre stage she so deserves.

The Vernon Community Arts Centre
Visiting Artist to give Lecture and Workshop The Vernon Community Arts Centre presents international artist Michael Kluckner for a special lecture and workshop on Friday and Saturday, May 30th and 31st ($170/$180, members/non-members).
Michael Kluckner is a writer and artist who has combined his love for BC's history and landscape in books including Vanishing British Columbia and Vancouver Remembered. Both books spent more than a month on BC's best-seller list; Vanishing British Columbia was a finalist for the non-fiction prize at the BC Book Awards in 2006, while Vancouver Remembered was a finalist for the Duthie Prize and won the 2007 Vancouver Book Prize.
Michael Kluckner has spent more than two decades recording and interpreting, in a dozen books, the histories and landscapes of Vancouver, British Columbia and Canada. A Vancouverite by birth, he has traveled extensively, always carrying a sketchbook, and developed an appreciation for the emotional and visual subtleties of our changing world. He lived on a farm in South Langley for a dozen years before moving to Australia in the autumn of 2006; his return to British Columbia coincides with arts awards presentations by the City of Vancouver.
The lecture: Michael Kluckner's two most recent books, Vanishing British Columbia and Vancouver Remembered, have focused on the way that roadside relics and unusual places tell stories that enliven our history and sense of ourselves. Using his own watercolours, plus illuminated maps and birds-eye views, as well as photographs and archival material, he argues that history and culture become less relevant once the landscape loses its layers of history. His illustrated lecture is a compelling argument for the stewardship of regional history in the face of urbanization and globalization.

Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art
4th Annual Video Salon
The Alternator Media Arts Centre presents the 4th annual Video Salon on Friday April 4 at 7pm. The evening includes screenings of eight video shorts curated by UBC Okanagan MFA candidate Joanne Gervais. All are welcome to attend and admission is by donation.
The videos selected for the salon represent the increasingly hybrid nature of our culture and it’s diverse and often marginalized
perspectives. These works challenge historical stereotypes while demonstrating the ongoing, often complex process of identity exploration and formation.
While all the featured artists are Canadian, their work addresses the negotiation of self in a variety of social contexts ranging from politics of the Israeli conflict to more personal issues of aboriginality, gender and sexuality.
The Alternator Media Arts Centre is a production facility for independent video, film, and new media artists. The space and its video production equipment is available for use by all Alternator members with an extended membership. The media centre invites local media artists and students to get involved! Please join us every Wednesday evening for the Be Scene from 6pm to 7:30 pm in the Alternator lounge to show off your works in progress and workshop with peers.
The Alternator Media Arts Centre, is operated by the Alternator Gallery for Contemporary art, an artist-run centre located on the main floor of the Rotary Centre for the Arts at 421 Cawston Avenue in Kelowna, BC, is open from 11 to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Admission is by donation. All are welcome.

F.H. Varley: Portraits into the Light
March 8 to April 27, 2008
The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased and proud to be one of several stops across Canada for this major exhibition of seventy works by F.H. Varley. This exhibition, F.H. Varley: Portraits into the Light, sets out to change a common impression about this revered Group-of-Seven artist, who was actually known in his lifetime more for his portraits than his work in landscape. Pushed aside by the strength of the mythology around the Group’s engagement with the empty, northern wilderness, Varley’s relationships and interest in people is now intended to come “into the light.”
From the mid 1920s to the mid 1930s, Varley lived in Vancouver where he taught at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts (which eventually became today’s Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design). It was here that he fell in love with one of his students, Vera Weatherbie, whose portrait we will see in the exhibition. Varley also was friendly with a woman who later came to live in Kelowna, Erica Leach, daughter of Kelowna artist Grace Willis. Three portraits by Varley of Erica Leach will also be on view.
Curated by Katerina Atanassova from the Varley Gallery in Markham, Ontario, this show is accompanied by a full-scale trade book as the catalogue to the exhibition, and will be for sale at the gallery for $60.
