The Wheel
School District 22 High School Art Students

What’s Happening in High School Art

The wheel is this year's theme for the collaborative art exhibition from the high school students of District 22.  Gallery vertigo is currently showing work from Vernon Senior Secondary, Fulton Secondary, Seaton Secondary, Kalamalka Secondary and Charles Bloom Secondary.

This show introduces high school art to the community on a multitude of levels. While there was one common theme was followed in the creation of works for this exhibition, a differnet approach was taken by each art teacher. Fulton school had a VW Beetle in the courtyard as a model for one of the classes. In another class each student was given a wedge with a colour wheel to create a part of a collaborative circular piece. VSS senior students were given a chance to explore their own personal imagery. They used the wheels as a metaphor and added their voice to the artwork. They incorporated their own worldly concerns into the paintings incorporating such as child cruelty, war, and the environment.

Randy Kaneda, the president of the Vernon Art teachers, appreciates the benefits this show brings to the students. He described the exhibition as “building a community of artists. It is building a bridge between an independent gallery and students.”

Being an independent artist-run centre, Vertigo offers more than just a venue for the exhibition of the students work. It also allows the students a chance to be involved in the other aspects of mounting an exhibition. For example, Gallery Vertigo welcomes students to take part in the set up of the exhibit and the opening night entertainment. Students are also encouraged share their accomplishment with family and friends.

Ronee de Langen, Fulton’s art teacher hopes that,  “People will take the time to read the artist statements, the thoughts that come from the idea of the wheel.”  (Written by: Julie Melanson)

The North Okanagan Artists Alternative Members Wall
Featured Artist: Deborah Coughlin

Fresh, strangely familiar, apocalyptic, spiritual - all these things and more have been said about my art.  I like to ask questions and to make people think and especially to inspire, although not all three are always present in one piece of work.  Currently I am working on an illustrated novel. Past works range from printmaking and photography to painting and sculpture but my favorite is interpretive dance. (Coughlin)

The Window Gallery
Featured Artist: Michael Anderson

I moved to Canada in 1993 from Orkney Isles and lived in Fort St. John for four years. Although I did some drawing and oil painting there, I have been more motivated since I moved to the Okanagan in 1997. I have experimented with drawing most of my life, taken several courses with various artists and have taken considerable enjoyment from drawing and painting at the Vernon Arts Centre. In Life Drawing and oil painting particularly, I feel I have developed some skill.

My approach in life drawing includes a variety of media - conte, charcoal, inl and mixed media. While I feel my oil painting needs further development, I have a loose, colourful style. I have exhibited witha local gallery and several of my paintings are in private collections. (Anderson)

The artists will be in attendance at this Saturday night's reception and will be happy to chat about their work with guests. The public is invited to share art and conversation in the casual atmosphere of our artist-run centre, the only one of its kind in the North Okanagan.

The first art exhibition of the New Year, to be held  at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre,  is entitled “INNOVATIONS”. This title was chosen in order to present participating artists with a challenge and an opportunity to step outside their comfort zone.   The show will consist of recent paintings by Okanagan artists who are also members of the Federation of Canadian Artists. We are looking forward to a show that will reflect innovative styles, mediums, techniques and subject matter.  In other words, this is not a show about safe, traditional picture making.

Call for Artists - from Leila Ward

I called the owner of Encore with an idea she agreed to: In the theme of Shabby Chic artists are asked to create a work of art no smaller than 24 x 18 in a manner that enhances the decor of the boutique. The works will be mounted in that white wall area above the racks of garments, patrons of the store will vote on a favourite work and that artist will win a gift certificate to use in the store. I will offer myself as the one to hang the works if artsist will deliver them to the store. It's meant to be fun, I plan on a large floppy flower in fabric patterns using some fluffy tissue, possibly even glitter. It could herald the beginning of having the Encore walls as another good place to have art displayed year round, thematically even, works might be sold from those walls...
If Interested, please call Leila Ward @ 558-0602.

The Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art

Kelowna based artist Shauna Oddleifson has been invited to participate as artist-in-residence this January at the Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art.

Oddleifson works in intaglio prints and reductive oil stick drawings to depict stories of childhood - a complex time of life when innocence and corruption conflict in often frightening ways.
Oddleifson says about her work, “Innocence and virtue are characteristics people usually apply to children, yet what can be witnessed in playgrounds in the absence of adults can be incredibly disconcerting. I have become fascinated with these cruel and strange things that often transpire between kids.” At fist glance the drawings appear humourous, yet upon close inspection contain mortifying endings. A smiling young girl can be seen pushing her friend off the wrong side of a slide, burying another in a sandbox or opening a jar of bees to sting other children.

The Alternator invites the public to visit Oddleifson in Studio 111 and to view her new work this February, which will be displayed in the Alternator Window Gallery, a glass enclosed exhibition space in the public area of the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

The Alternator Gallery offers member artists the opportunity to participate in a one-month residency in Studio 111 in the Rotary Centre for the Arts, the facility that houses the Alternator Gallery in Kelowna's downtown cultural district located at 421 Cawston Avenue.  For more information on the Alternator’s activities, visit the gallery from 11 to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
