Dear Friends and Artists:

UBC Okanagan Student Exhibition

Exhibition Run: February 12th to March 8, 2008.

Closing Reception: March 8th from 7pm to 9pm
Everyone is welcome to join the artists for an evening of live music and complimentary refreshments.

In Galleries One and Two

Gallery Vertigo is pleased to present this selection of drawings which were produced by students enrolled in the Creative Studies Program at UBC Okanagan. We wish to thank the Creative Studies Faculty for encouraging their students in this endeavour, in particular, Jim Tanner and Johann Feught, Associate Professors. Thank you for allowing us this rare glimpse into the creative process in its many variations. We applaud the involvement of the students in presenting this exhibition. Their enthusiasm is as inspiring as the work itself. Gallery Vertigo, the North Okanagan Artists Alternative and the North Okanagan community welcome the opportunity to view this diverse and compelling exhibition. (Judith Jurica)

In the dime stores and bus stations, people talk of situations, read books, repeat quotations, draw conclusions on the wall.
Bob Dylan, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, 1965

Since the earliest artists traced impressions in the sand or outlined animals and figures on cave walls, drawing has been used to capture experience and to formulate imaginary worlds. There have been advances in the technology of drawing, and contemporary artists have at their disposal a wide selection of tools and media, but drawing still provides a sense of tactility and immediacy that prehistoric artists would recognize. The artists of this exhibition continue to enjoy and exploit the sensual appeal, the directness, and the communicative power of this ancient art form.

The drawings in this exhibition are very diverse, ranging from figure study, expressionistic portraiture, investigation of human relationships, exploration of the natural world, celebration of pop culture, photorealistic representation, surrealistic fantasy, and experimentation with pure form. Some drawings feature text. Others test the boundary between drawing and painting. Still others incorporate three-dimensional elements. Surely the capacity of this art form to accommodate so many different modes of expression must be a factor in its remarkable endurance.

Despite the title of the exhibition, one has the feeling that the conclusions reached in these drawings are tentative and will be subject to change as these artists grow and develop their artistic voice. The advantage of drawing is that the means are near at hand, little preparation is necessary, and artists can quickly launch into new pieces to continue their search for new conclusions.

(Jim Tanner)

NOAA Meeting Sunday Afternoon, February 24th - 2pm

At the top of the agenda is to begin planning for the fall open members show. We are considering a positive environmental theme for the show and in conjunction with it possibly two evenings of music and readings in keeping with the theme. This is a timely topic and a great way to involve Vertigo in the community. Looking forward to lots of great ideas on the 24th.

Howard Brown, President, NOAA

Vertigo Voices Continues...

UP NEXT:
Kal Press Launches Book of Short Stories by Virginia Dansereau
Monday, February 25 - 7:30pm - Okanagan College Lecture Theatre

On Monday, Feb. 25, Okanagan College's Kalamalka Press will release "Undertow", a book of short stories by Virginia Dansereau.  She and the Vernon Speech and Drama students will present excerpts from the stories at 7:30 PM in the lecture theatre at Okanagan College.

Dansereau is an award-winning author who has captured firsts, thirds and honourary mentions in Canadian and English competitions.  She has published poetry and fiction in "Grain," "Other Voices," "Fireweed," "Room of One's Own," and "Harvest."  "Undertow" is her first collection of short stories.

The stories take place in local cities and towns, the prairies, and exotic locales Dansereau has visited.  They delve into topics of the human condition, such as friendship put to the test, death and grief, alcoholism, illness and the relationships of adult and child.  Her characters hit depths which provide new perceptions that are often mystical.

Dansereau has been working in the field of writing for twenty years, attending creative writing courses conducted by John Lent, Lorna Crozier, Patrick Lane and Edna Alford.  She managed Kalamalka Press for ten years overseeing the publication and marketing of five Kalamalka New Writers Series poetry books.  She is currently co-ordinating the "Roving Reader" program which provides oral readers to senior citizens in group homes.

Come Share a Story...

Storytelling Circle at Gallery Vertigo
Wednesday - March 12
Doors open @ 7pm. Storytelling starts @ 7:30pm
Coffee and goodies provided.
Admission by donation.
To commemorate World Storytelling Day the public is invited to attend a storytelling circle at Gallery Vertigo on March 12th at 7:30pm.
Started in Sweden in 1991 World Storytelling Day has grown into a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling.
“A storytelling circle is such a great way to share and enjoy stories,” says Gabriel Newman, the organizer of the event. Creator of Ghost Tours of Vernon Newman has also told stories with Christine Pilgrim in “A Pilgrim and a Pirate” as well as told comedic personal stories however he states that this event is not just for professional storytellers. “It is for anyone who has a story to tell or simply enjoys a good story.”
“The storytelling circle is incredibly simple,” says Newman, “Whoever shows up is welcome to tell a story, or to just listen, or both. There is no stage or podium. Storytellers can stay in their seat unless they prefer to stand. The only rules are that you can not read anything, stories have to be told from memory and that you should be respectful as far as length and content goes. Otherwise anything goes.”
In a way Newman is trying to replicate the kitchen table when friends and family would get together and share stories, whether they be legends or about family history.
“There are similar events, sometimes called story swaps or exchanges, going on all around the country. It is a great way to hear stories and share stories and I thought it was long overdue in the Okanagan,” states Newman
Admission to the Storytelling Circle is by donation. For more information contact Gabriel Newman at 260-8757.

Exhibition by NOAA Member Hanny Kooyman in Salmon Arm

The art of Hanny Kooyman is coming back to Salmon Arm from February 21 - March 1st.
It will be as exciting and reflective as her last show two years ago, "Community of Music" which exhibited in the Salmon Arm Art Gallery.  Her new series of oils and pastel entitled,
"Playing with Myth", will hang in First United Church, Okanagan Avenue across from Fletcher Park.

Hanny has a lifetime of experience in the art world.  When she emigrated to Canada with her husband, Cees, and two children, she hung her paintings in their coffee shop in Armstrong and sold every piece she painted. Patrons responded enthusiastically to Hanny's drawings and paintings of the area's familiar countryside.  She laughingly wishes she had some of her earlier works and commissions but each painting bought new shoes or winter coats in this new homeland.

Art tells us what is deeply among us. Hanny's latest series enables each viewer and culture to find the interconnectedness among us all. "The purpose of myth is to rise above the elements set by science and reasoning."  (Joseph Campbell)   When we connect with nature, we begin to understand what the quality of life means and what effect a world of respect, love and caring could have on all humanity.

You are invited to come, to view, to discuss, and to respond in the writing folder at the exhibit.  It will be definitely worth your while. (excerpt from the Salmon Arm Observer)

Church open: Mon.-Fri, Sunday 9-12AM
Saturday with the artist: March 1st, 10 AM - 4 PM

REEL ROOTz Indigenous Media Art Exhibition 2008
February 8 to April 13, 2008
PENTICTON, BC – The Ullus Collective is pleased to announce ‘REEL ROOTz Indigenous Media Arts Exhibition 2008 ’, an exhibition and series of artist talks highlighting the strength and diversity of film and video works by Indigenous filmmakers across Canada.
REEL ROOTz: Indigenous Media Arts Exhibition 2008 has been brought together by the Indigenous Arts Service Organization in partnership with the Okanagan Producers Collective, known as the Ullus Collective. The Ullus Collective supports the training and development of Aboriginal video and visual artists and provides a forum for voicing stories, issues and concerns that are not addressed by current mainstream media.
To complement this year’s film series, the Rotary Centre for the Arts Courtyard features Shaping of a Place, a site-specific group installation by En’owkin Center students from the National Aboriginal Professional Artist Training Program (NAPAT).  Curated by Geraldine Manossa M.A, this dynamic ensemble brings together cultural philosophies of Syilx (Okanagan) artists.  Students were given the task to observe how a community shapes a geographical environment, and now are challenged by the reverse concept to explore how art objects are affected by a defined space.  In this case, physical and environmental conditions including wind, snow, rain, and sunlight all play important social and physiological roles.
REEL ROOTz 2008 will continue with Venues and a line-up showcasing the innovative talent of first nations films in the works of Lisa Jackson,( Anishinaabe), Chris Bose, (N’laka’pamux),  Lorne Olson, (Cree), Jordan Wheeler, (Cree),  Mariel Belanger,(Syilx) Aimee Lezard, (Syilx), Chief Judy Wilson, (Secwepemc) Burton Amos, Hailsa, Jeff Bear, (Maliseet), Tracey Jack, (Syilx), Terrene Derek, (Gitxsan).
FOR Film LINE-UP contact Festival Coordinator, Tracey Jack tjack@vip.net (250)770-0124
