The Vertigo Chronicle Thursday February 21, 2008 Dear Friends and Artists: ![]() Drawing Conclusions: Exhibition Run: February 12th to March 8, 2008. Closing Reception: March 8th from 7pm to 9pm In Galleries One and Two Gallery Vertigo is pleased to present this selection of drawings which were produced by students enrolled in the Creative Studies Program at UBC Okanagan. We wish to thank the Creative Studies Faculty for encouraging their students in this endeavour, in particular, Jim Tanner and Johann Feught, Associate Professors. Thank you for allowing us this rare glimpse into the creative process in its many variations. We applaud the involvement of the students in presenting this exhibition. Their enthusiasm is as inspiring as the work itself. Gallery Vertigo, the North Okanagan Artists Alternative and the North Okanagan community welcome the opportunity to view this diverse and compelling exhibition. (Judith Jurica) In the dime stores and bus stations, people talk of situations, read books, repeat quotations, draw conclusions on the wall. Since the earliest artists traced impressions in the sand or outlined animals and figures on cave walls, drawing has been used to capture experience and to formulate imaginary worlds. There have been advances in the technology of drawing, and contemporary artists have at their disposal a wide selection of tools and media, but drawing still provides a sense of tactility and immediacy that prehistoric artists would recognize. The artists of this exhibition continue to enjoy and exploit the sensual appeal, the directness, and the communicative power of this ancient art form. The drawings in this exhibition are very diverse, ranging from figure study, expressionistic portraiture, investigation of human relationships, exploration of the natural world, celebration of pop culture, photorealistic representation, surrealistic fantasy, and experimentation with pure form. Some drawings feature text. Others test the boundary between drawing and painting. Still others incorporate three-dimensional elements. Surely the capacity of this art form to accommodate so many different modes of expression must be a factor in its remarkable endurance. Despite the title of the exhibition, one has the feeling that the conclusions reached in these drawings are tentative and will be subject to change as these artists grow and develop their artistic voice. The advantage of drawing is that the means are near at hand, little preparation is necessary, and artists can quickly launch into new pieces to continue their search for new conclusions. (Jim Tanner) Also enjoy these continuing exhibitions @ Gallery Vertigo: Featured Members Wall - prints by Deborah Coughlin Window Gallery - drawings by Michael Anderson We welcome proposals for these two spaces on an ongoing basis.
NOAA Meeting Sunday Afternoon, February 24th - 2pm At the top of the agenda is to begin planning for the fall open members show. We are considering a positive environmental theme for the show and in conjunction with it possibly two evenings of music and readings in keeping with the theme. This is a timely topic and a great way to involve Vertigo in the community. Looking forward to lots of great ideas on the 24th. Howard Brown, President, NOAA

Vertigo Voices Continues... Thanks to Sean Johnson and Alix Hawley who delivered a really exciting evening of readings last night at Gallery Vertigo....the best yet! UP NEXT: On Monday, Feb. 25, Okanagan College's Kalamalka Press will release "Undertow", a book of short stories by Virginia Dansereau. She and the Vernon Speech and Drama students will present excerpts from the stories at 7:30 PM in the lecture theatre at Okanagan College. Dansereau is an award-winning author who has captured firsts, thirds and honourary mentions in Canadian and English competitions. She has published poetry and fiction in "Grain," "Other Voices," "Fireweed," "Room of One's Own," and "Harvest." "Undertow" is her first collection of short stories. The stories take place in local cities and towns, the prairies, and exotic locales Dansereau has visited. They delve into topics of the human condition, such as friendship put to the test, death and grief, alcoholism, illness and the relationships of adult and child. Her characters hit depths which provide new perceptions that are often mystical. Dansereau has been working in the field of writing for twenty years, attending creative writing courses conducted by John Lent, Lorna Crozier, Patrick Lane and Edna Alford. She managed Kalamalka Press for ten years overseeing the publication and marketing of five Kalamalka New Writers Series poetry books. She is currently co-ordinating the "Roving Reader" program which provides oral readers to senior citizens in group homes. More Vertigo Voices to come... Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art Call for Submissions for 2009/10 Exhibition Year *Tickets on Sale Now for Alternator Gallery’s The WEARABLE ART GALA presented by the Alternator Gallery is back at the Join us March 29, 2008 at 7 PM. Tickets are $45 ($32 for students with Exhibition by NOAA Member Hanny Kooyman in Salmon Arm The art of Hanny Kooyman is coming back to Salmon Arm from February 21 - March 1st. Hanny has a lifetime of experience in the art world. When she emigrated to Canada with her husband, Cees, and two children, she hung her paintings in their coffee shop in Armstrong and sold every piece she painted. Patrons responded enthusiastically to Hanny's drawings and paintings of the area's familiar countryside. She laughingly wishes she had some of her earlier works and commissions but each painting bought new shoes or winter coats in this new homeland. Art tells us what is deeply among us. Hanny's latest series enables each viewer and culture to find the interconnectedness among us all. "The purpose of myth is to rise above the elements set by science and reasoning." (Joseph Campbell) When we connect with nature, we begin to understand what the quality of life means and what effect a world of respect, love and caring could have on all humanity. You are invited to come, to view, to discuss, and to respond in the writing folder at the exhibit. It will be definitely worth your while.
