Dear Friends and Artists:

Gallery Vertigo Announces New Exhibitions:

In Galleries One and Two:

Mellow Yellow - NOAA 6th Annual Members Open Exhibition

Exhibition Run: Tuesday, October 16th to Saturday, November 10th. (11am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturdays)

Saffron Soiree Opening Reception:  Saturday, October 20th from 7 to 9pm. Yellow will be worn!

Mellow Yellow is both the title and the theme of this exhibition of works by Members of the North Okanagan Artists Alternative. Artists from Salmon Arm to Westbank and everywhere in between have submitted works for this much anticipated exhibition and opening event. We even welcome two new members from Whitehorse who have joined the alternative to be part of the excitement that is the Annual Members Exhibition.

The exhibition promises to delight viewers with a deluge of the fabulous colour yellow in all of its permutations. Works representing many mediums, both two and three dimensional, are on exhibition. Our members have taken the theme and they have run with it. The result is a riotous celebration of pure and muted versions of this primary hue. Many have explored the many associations the words ‘mellow’ and ‘yellow’ suggest and there is definetly a "groovy" feeling going on here.

Mellow Yellow is sponsored by Noonan and Hewson Law Firm.

Please join us for the Saffron Soiree :

The opening reception, dubbed "The Saffron Soiree" will feature a sunny array of yellow edibles and beverages. We invite all to attend this free event. We ask only that you wear all the yellow you can mustard! (I mean muster). For a special treat, enjoy the electronic music of Justin Pasieka and Riotfish. Riotfish is the name of Justin Pasieka's imaginary collaborator. Together they take the non-musical and make it musical, or at least tolerable, through the use of electronic processing.

Join us for this fun event on Saturday, October 20th, from 7 to 9pm.

On the Featured Members' Wall

Louise Adams - Recent Mixed Media Work

Louise Adams refers to her work as abstract, contemporary and experimental mixed media. The work incorporates bright colour, texture, strong contrast and line. Adams is a member of the North Okanagan Artists Alternative, Alternator Gallery, Kelowna Art Gallery and the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan.

"I have always had a love of art and always felt the need to express myself in a creative manner. I like to think that my work shows me as I am - at times a simple person with simple tastes and a love of line and colour, and at other times - much more complex and questioning." (Adams)

The Window Gallery

Julia Trops - Works in Charcoal

Julia Trops is a Kelowna Artist who works primarily in charcoal. The works presented in the Window Gallery are two-dimensional explorations of the human form. Trops holds a studio in the Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna's Cultural District.

"My ideas incorporate my philosophy and understanding of life and space. My interests, which are currently manifesting in my expression, consist of a combination of concepts from time, space, and music...Alhough I am conversant with many media and supports, I primarily use charcoal because of its conceptual properties of earth and musk. This allows me to explore figurative shapes and form on a two-dimensional surface, with saturated values in a simultaneously bold and sensitive manner. The marks on paper become notational and gestural, and describe the human form or concepts in a musical, rhythmic style." (Trops)

Ghost Tours of Vernon Presents: Blood, Gore and Guts!

This Halloween, terror, werewolves, madness and murder will be coming to the OUC Lecture Theatre on October 27th in the form of “Blood, Gore and Guts; olde fashioned stories and songs for adults and bloodthirsty children.”

Presented by Ghost Tours of Vernon it will pair its creator, Mr. Gabriel Newman, with actress Ms Christine Pilgrim and musician Ms Deborah Gabinet in this evening of ghoulish entertainment.

During the course of the evening stories and songs will be presented from various genres in a variety of styles. “It is kind of a retrospective on horror writing and presentation,” says Newman who indicates there are pieces by such notable macabre writers as Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, The Brothers Grimm and many others. “Because their styles are so different we thought we would also vary how we presented the pieces so we have everything from straight forward storytelling, to theatrical performance, to a classic radio play complete with sound effects as well as an assortment of ghoulish and occasionally campy songs,” grins Newman.

An indoor show is a bit of a deviation for Newman who usually does location specific shows such as last year’s “Rumour of a House” at the Caetani House as well as Christmas mummering around town and storytelling with Christine Pilgrim at Cenotaph Park. However Newman is best known for his outdoor walking tour Ghost Tours of Vernon which will also be running in October from the 22nd to the 25th. “For the past five years I have had requests to do an indoor show but I never felt like my tours would transfer well to an indoor location. After working with Christine Pilgrim and Deborah Gabinet with last year’s Christmas mummering I realized that we worked very well together and could complement each other’s skills into an entertaining and varied indoor Halloween show,” explains Newman.

The performance is sponsored by the Okanagan University College which delights Newman who says, “the lecture theatre is a great performance space, the seating and acoustics are such that it can fit a nice number of people in it yet still feel very intimate which is perfect for this kind of show.”

Tickets are available at The Bean Scene or at the door (cash only) and are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. For more information contact 260-8757.

Strategies of the Millipede

An Exhibit of the work of the Z'otz* Collective and the three individual artists of the collective

October 12 to November 10

Three of Toronto's emerging artists have been collaborating for three years under the name Z'otz*. Nahum Flores, Erik Jerezeno and Ilyana Martinez createwatercolour and mixed media pieces that illustrate a provocativeyetplayful surrealist art. In consecutive years the collective haswonawards at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition: 2006 - HonourableMentionin watercolour; 2007 - Drawing Award. Last year the collective'sworkwas presented at the Toronto International Art Fair.

This exhibit demonstrates how the signature of each artist combines to create inventive images that capture the imagination of the viewer.Z'otz*is asummary of sorts. Ilyana's delicate balance of the manmade and the natural, Nahum's quiet environmental angst and Erik's illogical and disconcerting narrative all merge harmoniously to create theZ'otz*compositions.

Spence Gallery specializes in contemporary expressions of Caribbean, Latin and African culture.
