The Vertigo Chronicle - Friday, November 23, 2007.

Dear Friends and Artists:

Gallery Vertigo is pleased to present these great new exhibitions! On December 15th we will conclude our fifth year of exhibitions and events. Please note that I have included all Vernon submissions in the vertigo Chronicle this month. The Chronicle is normally a cross section of what is happening at various non-profit/artist-run institutions throughout the area. Due to the large volume of submissions, I do not usually include submissions from commercial venues. In the spirit of the season, however, I have tried to acommodate everyone this time. So many great artists, so many great venues in our region!

Current Exhibitions:

November 1 – December 22, 2007

The Vernon Public Art Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition of abstract mixed-media paintings produced by Jude Clarke. The exhibition There’s Something in the Air concludes the project that this Vernon-based artist started to develop in 1999. The project consisting of literary non-fiction and a visual art exhibition started with writing and consequent publication titled The Language of Water in 2002. The narrative(s) in the book give the readers a glimpse of Clarke’s life experiences living with a chronic condition that often dictated the course of her activities and, inevitably, her life. The Language of Water has received critical attention in Canada, England and the USA.

The annual Members’ Exhibition, smallMATTERS, expresses the Gallery’s commitment to its members providing them with an opportunity to produce and exhibit artwork with other artists in the community. In spite of the limited scale of the work, all participants create an intimate artwork enjoyed and appreciated by visitors. smallMATTERS is a popular annual tradition at the Gallery and, along with the expanded Giftshop selections, should not be missed.

Power Comes in a Form of a Circle is an exhibition of painted deer hide ceremonial drums. The Okanagan Nation artist David Wilson explores the mythical narratives of the Okanagan First Nation’s people. Based on the pictographs found on several sites in the Okanagan, the artist creates a re-interpretation of traditional stories.

The public can view the exhibition during the Gallery’s regular hours, Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM, and on Saturdays from 11 AM to 4 PM. For more information about the exhibition and the exhibition programming, contact the Vernon Public Art Gallery at 250.545.3173.

The show, Mélange, at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre, is a collection of some of the drawings and paintings done by artists over the past year by artists of the Okanagan Artists League.

The Okanagan Artists’ League is a group of artists residing in and around the city of Vernon, located in the beautiful Okanagan valley in central British Columbia, Canada. The area is devoted primarily to fruit growing, market gardens, ranching and tourism. Several large lakes, including Kalamalka Lake (which means "lake of many colours" in the Okanagan  First Nation language) and the ninety mile long Okanagan Lake, provide marvelous scenery for tourists and artists alike. The Artists’ League, which began as the Vernon Art Association, established and ran the Topham-Brown Gallery before it became the Vernon Public Art Gallery. Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art's 5th Annual Wearable Art Gala
Call for Submissions
The Alternator Gallery’s 5th Annual Wearable Art Gala is happening again this coming spring 2008. This fun and funky adult event is not a fashion show in the traditional sense - it's an artistic exploration of all types of body adornment.
Last year’s event was an overwhelming success with 50 participating artists presenting their creative works to the event's largest audience to date. At the Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Arts, we know successful events are dependent on community participation, and the Wearable Arty Gala is no different.
We are currently accepting submissions for our 2008 show. If you have an interesting idea of design art you can wear, simply download an entry form for the gallery web site: www.alternatorgallery.com. Simply follow the instructions on the entry form making sure entries include drawings and/or photos or your submission along with a brief description of your project.
There are no entry fees, however you must be a gallery member. If you are interested in participating in this year’s event and are not a gallery member, don’t worry. A $25.00 membership fee (or $15.00 for students/seniors) can be enclosed with your entry form. Wearable art submissions can be returned, just include an SASE with your entry form.

Accepted submissions will be showcased at the Alternator Gallery’s 2008 Wearable Art Gala.

Deadline for submissions: Saturday Dec. 8, 2007.

The Kelowna Art Gallery

The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to present Nexus: Histories and Communities, an exhibition of works from the permanent collection of the Kelowna Art Gallery in celebration of the gallery’s thirtieth anniversary.

This show will draw on the depth and variety of the art collection that began in Kelowna in 1977, and was the kernel and initial essence of the future gallery. The shared history that has unfolded since then has involved many players and enthusiasts over the years, and the collection has been shaped by various engaged individuals.

Conceived as several clusters of works of art that have been grouped under loosely defined themes, the exhibition will also underscore the various developments and changes in artistic attitude and practice over the decades within each working area. Some of these themes will be: depictions of and around the orchard industry, developments in abstraction, work in the graphic media of drawing and printmaking, and shifts in art-making in the areas of sculpture and installation. Both historical and contemporary pieces will be included.
