Vertigo Chronicle February 22, 2007
Dear Friends and Artists:
In Gallery One and Two:
UBC-O Creative Studies Students:
Pressing Engagements
Tuesday, February 13th to Friday, March 16th
Closing Reception - Friday, March 16th
Gallery Vertigo is pleased to present this selection of prints which were produced by students enrolled in the Creative Studies Program at UBC Okanagan. We wish to thank the Creative Studies Faculty for encouraging their students in this endeavour, in particular, Briar Craig, Head Associate Professor. Thank you for allowing us this rare glimpse into the creative process in its many variations. We applaud the involvement of the students in presenting this exhibition. Their enthusiasm is as inspiring as the work itself. Gallery Vertigo, the North Okanagan Artists Alternative and the North Okanagan community welcome the opportunity to view this diverse and compelling exhibition.
This exhibition presents the work of students in the first few years of exploration into the media of printmaking at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Despite the demands of directed assignments there are already diverse and individual explorations occurring. These young artists are beginning to see how they can use the tools available to them to express themselves in personally significant ways. (Briar Craig)
And, please join us for the following presentation and discussion:
Tuesday, March 6 from 7 to 9pm
State Proof:
the state of contemporary printmaking
with Briar Craig, B.F.A., M.V.A.
Head, Department of Creative Studies
Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies
To say that the art world is in a state of constant flux would be an understatement. At this point in time (just over six years into the 21st century) there no longer seem to be any definitive rules about the making of art. Artists are free to mix media and explore well beyond the traditional confines of any particular medium. Printmaking, in particular, is well suited to this expansion and evolution.
Even from a traditionalist’s point of view ‘the print’ has always been a varied and difficult entity to define. The qualities and physical characteristics of all types of prints - lithographs, etching, engravings, screen prints, woodcuts and linoleum cuts, etc - vary greatly and the only real similarity is that they can usually be made as multiple originals (editions). Often, it seems, that is where any significant dialogue about the print gets bogged down. Prints are usually discussed in terms of their physical characteristics, materials and the processes used to create them with little regard to the ideas and conceptual investigations that the artist might be working through. The fact is that print media are as inclusive and expansive as any other field in the larger world of art. Perhaps they are even more so. They can adapt to the inclusion of the latest digital technologies but they can also make use of processes as seemingly old fashioned as woodblock cutting. Prints are able to amalgamate and synthesize diverse imagery, materials, and ideological approaches to art making; and, print media allow great creative latitude and perfectly reflect and conceptually form the foundations of much of our mass media-based culture. And, all of that makes print media ideal tools for the production of informed, conceptually diverse and, at the same time, physically rich art in the 21st century.
The contemporary art world is in a constant state of change and that is no more evident than in the realm of printmaking. From its very origins the media traditionally associated with printmaking (woodblock, etching, lithography, collagraph and screenprinting) have constantly evolved and re-invented themselves as new developments in inks, equipment, and the conceptual expectations of the art world have changed. This discussion will introduce the current state of a variety of printmaking media and how they have adapted to the development of digital media and a 21st century media based culture. (Briar Craig)

Cynthia Kelly:
Construction and Destruction
Tuesday, February 13th to Friday, March 16th
Closing Reception - Friday, March 16th, 7-9pm
Local artist and NOAA member Cynthia Kelly presents a series of small works which combine found object assemblage with digital photography. The work is further expanded by the accompanying text.
What is an Artist but a seeker, investigator, interpreter. In a departure from my traditional work (acrylic painting), in this series, utilizing found objects, writing and digital photography I focus on the overlooked, discarded, damaged in an attempt to rework items or images with consideration given to unintentional beauty, source and conclusion. Each work contains elements and inferences known and unknown. Perhaps the result is the work itself or maybe it's just the thought? It seems that the question is the answer. (Kelly)
Both exhibitions will be celebrated with a closing reception on Saturday March 16th from 7 to 9pm. Many of the artists will be in attendance. We invite the public to attend. Live music and complimentary refreshments will be provided. Admission is by donation.

Quebec artist Gilles Morissette creates “Light Between Us” with French-language students
Quebec artist Gilles Morissette works in collaboration with local French-language students to confront viewers with the question of their own identity in an exhibition that opens Friday, March 16 at the Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art.
Light Between Us / Lumière entre nous is a three-dimensional installation that places viewers in an environment that uses digital and dawn traces of the body to evoke a discourse about ourselves and our relationships to others.
Some 125 students aged six to 16 at L’École Anse-au-sable are spending several weeks working with Morissette, drawing each other’s eyes on light bulbs and documenting each other with digital photographs that will be installed in the gallery beneath the light bulbs.
“The process of identifying the other is initiated through sight,” says Morissette. “It is through the recognition of the other’s face and, subsequently, with audition and speech, that the acknowledgement of the other takes place. In essence, the other forms a part of ourselves as beings and allows us to realize our potential as individuals.”
The project is inspired by the writing of French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas.
Morissette is a Montreal-based artist with a doctorate from the University of Paris VIII and a Master’s degree in Fine Art from Concordia University in Montreal. He has shown internationally with solo exhibitions in Denmark, Japan, France and Canada.
Also showing at the Alternator Gallery is Material Matters, an exhibition by UBC Okanagan students David Markin, Pudy Tong, Ketrena Schultz, Caitlin Ffrench and Cindy Marshall.
The opening reception, which starts with a talk by Morissette, runs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 16. Both exhibitions continue to April 28.
The Alternator, an artist-run centre located on the main floor of the Rotary Centre for the Arts at 421 Cawston Ave., is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Admission is by donation.

Call to all Artists and Earth Lovers!!!!
The ‘Wheels for Change’ Campaign needs your talent!!
We need to have a logo and also a border design for our website. The logo will be used on all our printed and digital media. For the website, we would also like to have a border around the edges. Some suggestions are to use child-like style artistry, roads, bicycles and the earth symbol in a manner that captures the aims of the ‘Wheels for Change’ campaign.
We are a non-profit group and are looking for an in-kind donation; your reward will be to have your art featured on our website, letters, handouts, posters, t-shirts, etc.. It is also your way to show your support for this campaign.
We hope to have your submissions soon, byFebruary 28th.
If you are interested in helping us, or in learning more, please don't hesitate to contact us.
