Gallery Vertigo Presents: FALL FORWARD The Annual North Okanagan Artists Alternative Members Exhibition Exhibition Run: Tuesday, October 17 to Friday, November 10, 2006. In Gallery One and Two: FALL FORWARD
The North Okanagan Artists Alternative proudly presents its Annual Open Members Exhibition. This year's theme is not really a theme at all. Instead, NOAA Members have been invited to put forth their most recent work. The response has been overwhelming! Make sure to come in and see what is percolating in the minds of the artists in the region. Members have submitted one or several works utilizing any and all mediums. The result is an astounding variety. From works in ceramic and fibre to paint, drawing, metal, mixed media and photography, our members cover the whole gamut both in media and in subject matter.
An opening reception will take place this Saturday, October 21 at 7pm. Live entertainment and complimentary refeshments will be featured along with fine local wines by donation. Come meet the many local artists who will be in attendance. Admission is also by donation. Come and help us celebrate the season and our art-filled region! You are invited to wear your favourite fall colours and join us for a colourful and enjoyable evening.
The NOAA Members Wall: The Kalamalka Weavers and Spinners Guild
The Weavers and Spinners Guild recently participated in a "Sheep to Shawl" event in Salmon Arm and have come home with a third place ribbon! Come and see the result and read about the process on our NOAA Members Wall. Incredibly, the beautiful shawl on exhibit was produced in only one day by this team of skilled artisans. The Weavers and Spinners have many high quality hand-spun and hand-woven items for sale in their studio at Gallery Vertigo. Be sure to check out the work of these artists the next time you drop by. They have some great gift ideas: beautiful table runners, scarves, shawls and more. Turn left at the top of the stairs.

Vertigo Voices:
This Friday, October 20th (doors open at 7:00pm...reading starts at 7:30pm) we will be launching a big, beautiful new book of poetry from Thistledown by Heidi Garnett, called PHOSPHORUS. As many of you know, Heidi is a poet from Kelowna who has published widely in periodicals and has been working very hard on the craft of her poems for the last four years, almost full-time, in fact. This has been an amazing journey for Heidi---she has focused so deeply and has sought out the editorial advice of poets like Tim Lilburn, Patrick Lane, Don McKay, Greg Simison and others...)---and the result is a rather astonishing book of poems. Very strong, very demanding, rather controversial in some ways, and very beautiful. Please come out and encourage others to come out. It is so exciting when one of our own has this kind of event...a celebration for all of us really. (John Lent)
Admission is by donation. Suggested donation is $5.00

Strategies for Teaching Art:
We still have a few spots left! Gallery Vertigo is offering a one time opportunity for artists wanting to further their employment opportunities. The British Columbia Arts Council is sponsoring this Professional Development Opportunity for Artists, a workshop series entitled Strategies for Teaching Art. The series will train artists to plan and present fine art and fine craft workshops in institutional settings such as public art galleries and arts centres, as well as privately.
These five lectures deal with topics such as Identifying Strengths, Ethics and Tolerance, The Purpose of a Lesson Plan, Mandates and Vision Statements of Regional Institutions. Discussions on utilizing materials such as found objects and donated materials are included as well as information for special needs workshops and age appropriateness.
The purpose of this workshop series is to offer artists practical teaching information and also to build confidence with regard to specific teaching challenges. Many excellent opportunities for employment exist in our community for artists with teaching skills. This series will help you take advantage of them. Local arts organizations have expressed a keen interest in hiring the participants of this program.
Gallery Vertigo would like to sponsor one workshop participant who would then be given the opportunity to present workshops for the gallery. The Vernon Art Gallery has agreed to sponsor one workshop participant as well. The gallery would like to be able to contract the participating artist for future gallery workshops. Anyone who is interested in being the recipient of these sponsorships should contact Jude Clarke, Strategies Project Coordinator, Gallery Vertigo.
The series commences Wednesday, October the 25th, 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Participants must pre-register at Gallery Vertigo. Class size is limited so please register as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
The cost of the five workshops is $100.00. For a detailed outline of the series, pick up a brochure at Gallery Vertigo, Suite #1 (upstairs) 3001-31st Street, Vernon, BC. For more information phone Gallery Vertigo at (250) 503-2297 or Jude Clarke at (250) 542-1785.
