Gallery #1
Almost Famous
See our Almost Famous Gallery here......

Gallery One currently boasts a fabulous collection of copies of famous art works. Come and view the likes of Monet, Matisse and Modigliani! These sensational original works (all 50 of them!) are extremely well-executed in a wide variety of media. These masterpieces were created by artists in the region and donated for auction to raise funds to support exhibitions and programming at Gallery Vertigo. The works will be on exhibition until Saturday August 21st at which time they will be auctioned to the highest bidder starting at 8pm.

Tickets are available for just $10 in advance at Gallery Vertigo for those who would like to attend the event. The number of tickets is limited, so they may not be available at the door for this popular event! We urge you to buy your ticket early to avoid disappointment!

Our Gala Reception begins at 7pm

Please arrive on time!
Excellent appetizers will be served from 7 to 8pm (included in ticket price) and wine will be served for a small donation.
Live music will play from 7 to 8pm to allow guests to mingle and have a close look at the works before the action begins. (Musicians TBA)
Guests are asked to wear their most fantastic frippery for this over-the-top elegant affair. (What better time to sport your boas and silk, your jewels and tiaras, your cowboy boots and tatoos?!)
This is a cash and carry event! We accept cash or cheque only.
By the way, her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II,  (aka Christine Pilgrim) will begin the auction promptly at 8pm! Tardiness is tantamount to treason!

God Save the Queen!

About Auctioneer Christine Pilgrim:

Christine Pilgrim studied method acting with Joan Littlewoods's theatre workshop in the East end of London, England. After three years training, she went straight into London's West end with an awful play called The Overdog, and soon she came out again! Her TV claim to fame is in The Benny Hill Show. She's made several films, including The Fool which is available on DVD here in Canada.

Always having an eye and an ear for comedy, she specialized in British music hall and eventually became a stand-up comic, both on the international and British stage and was featured on British TV.

Pilgrim immigrated to Canada in 1992, when her stepfather died, to look after her mother.

She got bitten by the BC history bug and specializes in bringing stories from the past to life at historic sites from Barkerville to Fort Langley and all stops between, including our local Hat Creek Ranch. She also visits schools and museums with her one-woman history-based shows, and her indominatable school ma'am character, "Mrs. McPherson". She has appeared at Gallery Vertigo as the artist Emily Carr and, of course, as Her Majesty the Queen. She has also conducted family workshops and done some storytelling at the gallery.

Pilgrim is also a great storyteller and frequently presents classic stories, as well as some of her own, to children at schools and private functions. Her latest (and dearest) venture has been facilitating workshops that use drama to problem solve, with youth at risk.

Comedy always feeds whatever Christine Pilgrim does, whether it's a show, historic interpretation, storytelling or workshopping. She is convinced that laughter keeps you healthy; it prompts the memory glands and is the best way to learn anything. It certainly feeds her outlook on life.

NOAA Members Wall Gallery: Katalin (Kati) Gardiner

The North Okanagan Artists Alternative Members' Wall features work by our very own members. We include a photograph of each member along with the exhibiton so that we can all get to know each other little better. This is important because our organization includes members who live elsewhere in BC and around the country. We have members living as far away as Vancouver, the Yukon, and even Paris, France! This month presents four mixed media works by local artist Kati Gardiner. The works were created at the Vernon Community Arts Centre's life drawing sessions.

Vertigo Window Gallery: It's a Sign!
You may have noticed that our usual gallery space in the window on 30th Avenue is now sporting a new Gallery Vertigo sign. Signage has always been needed and funds never seemed to allow for the installation of expensive signage on the outside of our building. That fact, combined with infrequent access to the window space led us to come up with this solution. Let us know how you like it.

Kalamalka Vertigo at Okanagan College:

Recollections: Recent work by Gale Woodhouse
(The current exhibition can be viewed during college hours from now until September 15th. )

About Gale Woodhouse:
Trained as an art and design teacher and apprenticed as a production potter, Gale Woodhouse now has a studio in Vernon, British Columbia.
Formally educated at Nene University College and Leicester University, Woodhouse taught art and design in England for 4 years before entering Herefordshire School of Art to study Studio Ceramics. Following apprenticeships with two of England’s leading potters, Gale opened her own studio in 1981. After years of experimentation and exploration, teaching and learning, many exhibitions and shows, Woodhouse is accomplished in the applied art of pottery. She works her chosen medium with ease and dexterity and still finds joy and passion in the making of clay forms.
The artist’s work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions both in England and Canada.
Woodhouse is currently working as Artist in Residence at the Vernon Community Arts Centre.

Artist Statement
The work displayed here represents a small selection of a larger body of work produced during my tenure as Artist in Residence at Vernon Community Arts Centre.
I use clay panels as pages from a sketch book. I draw and sketch my experiences of landscapes directly onto the clay and then play with texture and colour to represent what I recall of places I have visited. I become acquainted with my scenery using this method. I recall and translate the ground beneath my feet, the forms on the horizon and details of changes bought about by weather and seasons. The panels are not only about how and what I remember, they are also about how and what I felt.
Pat McKay and I had known each other for several years before she asked me to join her in the project. We had never worked together and at the beginning struggled with how our very different materials and styles of work would come together.
It became evident very early on that the things we had in common, not our differences, needed to be explored for the sustainability of the project.
We both had a love of all things natural – hence why we both chose to work with natural materials, clay and wool. We both had a fascination for stone structures and the history they contained. Our research led us to the stories and myths surrounding the stone monoliths and walls of the ancient Celtic world and back to each of our heritages in rural England. The working title, "walls and stone structures," was set and the project took on a life of its own.
My chosen work, entitled Cellular Memory, developed following many visits to the stone circles and ancient burial sites in England. I have a particular affinity and fondness for The Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire, England, a site I have known since I was a child. The encased energy harnessed within the standing stones became the motivating spirit for the clay forms exhibited at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre.
Surrounded by mythology and legend the Standing Stones hold the cellular memory of our ancestors. Within the ancient stone structures exists the emotional and spiritual heritage of ancient peoples, locked inside forever, a true time capsule.
