North Okanagan ArtistsAlternative
Members' Juried Exhibition

sculpture by Stephan Bircher

This exhibition celebrates the artistic richness of the Okanagan arts scene showcasing what artists, writers and performers consider to be their best and most recent work. All artists, writers, musicians and performers were invited to participate. What resulted was a deluge of paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures, with a total sixty-six works being received. After much deliberation, 31 works were chosen by our juror to create an intriguing and impressive exhibition. Come and view the result and enjoy our community's creative spirit in its many permutations!

Juried exhibtions are an important aspect of every exhibiting artist's development. They offer an opportunity for artists to work towards this achievement and to note it when building a Curriculum Vitae. Gallery Vertigo wishes to thank and congratulate all artists who submitted works for this exhibition. Your participation is key to making this a noteworthy juried event.

Thank you to juror Briar Craig. Craig's approach was very considered and professional. Being a juror is never and easy job, and we appreciate his willingness to perform this important function for the artists of the North Okanagan and for Gallery Vertigo. (Judith Jurica)

Comments from Juror Briar Craig:

Adjudicating an exhibition is never easy especially when the quality and number of works submitted far exceed the amount of gallery space available.  Often, some very nice works need to be eliminated for the sake of the overall exhibition.  Every work that was taken out of the gallery was done so grudgingly and a few caused me genuine grief – quite simply, there were many things to applaud in each work submitted.

From a juror’s point of view, the most advantageous situation is to have a body of strong works to choose from.  It was clear from my first perusal through the works that there was a very high level of accomplishment in the submissions for this year’s exhibition.  It was also clear that the members of the NOAA are expressing themselves through an impressive array of artistic styles, genres and materials.  The works hanging in this exhibition attest to the fact that the creative spirit is alive and well in the Okanagan and I applaud everyone who chose to take part.  I sincerely hope that I have helped to put together a good exhibition.  The quality of each individual work speaks for itself.  (Craig)

NOAA Members Wall - featured artist: Justin Pasieka

Local artist Justin Pasieka has grown increasingly irritated by the changes he has observed around him in the North Okanagan over the past 25 years. The artist has chosen to funnel that agitation into his creative expression which employs a wide variety of mediums. The media he chooses include film and animation, digital and traditional painting and comic books. Pasieka considers the latter to be his  "home turf". He is currently involved in an animated film project, is working on a graphic novel and runs several comic strips on his website. The artist also occasionally devotes some time to his electronic music project, Riotfish.

Artist Statement:

In short, history is accelerating uncomfortably, and the future is very uncertain. It is art's challenge to find a place in this murky, shifting landscape. I've found that the best way to approach this dismal modern mess is to take meta-view snapshots of each major problem area.

Dreams are one of my biggest artistic influences, as they are nature's way of summing up complex situations. At the same time, the complexity of the world situation requires a lot of research and studious observation. One has to be balanced with the other, and this is my current artistic struggle. (Justin Pasieka)

Vertigo Window Display - featured artist: Helena Valk

Helena Valk

This month our "window on the street" features local painter Helena Valk. Fresh, unfettered and joyful could be used to describe this artist's colourful acrylics on canvas. Passersby are sure to be intrigued and are bound to linger at the corner of 30th Avenue and 31st Street in downtown Vernon for a hit of colour and an inspiring moment or two.

Artist Statement:

I have lived in BC for about 18 years in Kitimat, Revelstoke and Vernon. The Okanagan is beautiful and inspiring. I am an untrained artist and love to just let my paintings evolve with no planning. Having worked most of my life in the clerical field it is now great to be free and express myself in this way. Colour and shapes in an unstructured whimsical composition reflect my personality and sense of freedom.

I find it is better for me not to get too much advice or direction or to try to copy another artist's style and just be myself. (Helena Valk)
