Katie Brennan - Stasis Strategy
|

|
Katie Brennan is an artist formerly based in Vancouver, where she completed her BFA at the Emily Carr Institute. Brennan is currently pursuing her MFA at the University of Guelph, in Guelph, Ontario. The artist was born and raised in Vernon, BC. Brennan paints abstracts which are often composed of lines and colours. The deceptively simple line constructions interact to create structures which delineate space in a frequently ambiguous and seductive fashion. Each painting in Stasis Strategy is a re-abstraction of a previous painting. The artist employs generative/re-generative strategies, such as "recombination, repetition, reverb, and refraction" in response to previous works.
"I am interested in how images communicate. I am interested in abstraction because it presents images in their simplest, geometric forms. This simplified form allows me to investigate and play with how we comprehend and assign meaning to visual information. Most of my work begins with a starting point from which I generate and apply criteria to; this criteria is what sets the trajectory of each piece. The forms I re-abstract demonstrate a geometric simplicity and inherent formal qualities that dictate how and where re-abstraction will occur -- the generative strategies take the visual character of the initial form into account and responds to them in a way that allows the initial formal qualities to be maintained." (Brennan)

Floribunda |
Gallery Vertigo offers a light-hearted explosion of colour and a celebration of summer...
FLORIBUNDA! ...an exhibition to celebrate the abundant flora of the land and blossoms of the fertile imagination!
Artists from far and wide have submitted works in a multitude of media for this floral-themed exhibition. The title describes what the show is all about...FLORIBUNDA!...a multitude of flowers. A size restriction was also in force, so what has resulted is a gallery chock full of small flower works ....a floral extravaganza, a veritable garden of delight! Many modestly priced works available for purchase.
