Drawing Conclusions: UBC Okanagan Student Exhibition

Gallery Vertigo is pleased to present this selection of drawings which were produced by students enrolled in the Creative Studies Program at UBC Okanagan. We wish to thank the Creative Studies Faculty for encouraging their students in this endeavour, in particular, Jim Tanner and Johann Feught, Associate Professors. Thank you for allowing us this rare glimpse into the creative process in its many variations. We applaud the involvement of the students in presenting this exhibition. Their enthusiasm is as inspiring as the work itself. Gallery Vertigo, the North Okanagan Artists Alternative and the North Okanagan community welcome the opportunity to view this diverse and compelling exhibition. (Judith Jurica)

In the dime stores and bus stations, people talk of situations, read books, repeat quotations, draw conclusions on the wall.
Bob Dylan, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, 1965

Since the earliest artists traced impressions in the sand or outlined animals and figures on cave walls, drawing has been used to capture experience and to formulate imaginary worlds. There have been advances in the technology of drawing, and contemporary artists have at their disposal a wide selection of tools and media, but drawing still provides a sense of tactility and immediacy that prehistoric artists would recognize. The artists of this exhibition continue to enjoy and exploit the sensual appeal, the directness, and the communicative power of this ancient art form.

The drawings in this exhibition are very diverse, ranging from figure study, expressionistic portraiture, investigation of human relationships, exploration of the natural world, celebration of pop culture, photorealistic representation, surrealistic fantasy, and experimentation with pure form. Some drawings feature text. Others test the boundary between drawing and painting. Still others incorporate three-dimensional elements. Surely the capacity of this art form to accommodate so many different modes of expression must be a factor in its remarkable endurance.

Despite the title of the exhibition, one has the feeling that the conclusions reached in these drawings are tentative and will be subject to change as these artists grow and develop their artistic voice. The advantage of drawing is that the means are near at hand, little preparation is necessary, and artists can quickly launch into new pieces to continue their search for new conclusions.

NOAA Members Wall - featured artist: Deborah Coughlin

Fresh, strangely familiar, apocalyptic, spiritual - all these things and more have been said about my art.  I like to ask questions and to make people think and especially to inspire, although not all three are always present in one piece of work.  Currently I am working on an illustrated novel. Past works range from printmaking and photography to painting and sculpture but my favorite is interpretive dance. I moved to Canada in 1993 from Orkney Isles and lived in Fort St. John for four years. Although I did some drawing and oil painting there, I have been more motivated since I moved to the Okanagan in 1997. I have experimented with drawing most of my life, taken several courses with various artists and have taken considerable enjoyment from drawing and painting at the Vernon Arts Centre. In Life Drawing and oil painting particularly, I feel I have developed some skill.

My approach in life drawing includes a variety of media - conte, charcoal, ink and mixed media. While I feel my oil painting needs further development, I have a loose, colourful style. I have exhibited with a local gallery and several of my paintings are in private collections. (Anderson)
