Z’otz* Collective - Modified Intuition |
Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano, and Ilyana Martínez met one day and created a new entity – Z’otz* – an amalgamation
of their personalities and a fusion of their artistic styles.
Each of these drawings has been created by all three members of the Z'otz* Collective, a group of artists living
and working in Toronto. In weekly drawing sessions,
these curious souls explore the freedom of the absurd through experimental collaboration.
Among their themes are ideas exploring the immigrant experience, mapping, travel, translation, and urban life.
These ideas are addressed in a peculiar style using the language of hybrid beasts, quirky characters, and odd imaginary spaces.
* Z’otz is the Mayan word for "bat".
This exhibition is sponsored by Nixon Wenger.

Kurt Hutterli - The Museum of Unknown Civilizations
|
"On June 25, 2003, I made the decision to realize a dream, which I’ve had since my childhood days: I founded a personal museum: The Museum of Unknown Civilizations".
(Kurt Hutterli)
In Gallery Two this month is a fascinating assortment of assemblage works by Oliver artist, Kurt Hutterli.
Comprised of natural and man made found objects loaded with texture and patina, the created objects take on a museum-like quality.
Hutterli is fascinated by museums and the objects found in them. As a child, the objects which had question marks attached to their labels were of particular interest. Many of his titles end in a question mark as well. The question mark provides a loose end, an unanswered question, an invitation to wonder. For this exhibition, the artist is sharing works from his own museum, the Museum of Unknown Civilizations.
He invites the viewer to become immersed in his secretive worlds and to share in the invented imaginative stories he uses to explain his curious works.
"It is for that child within me and within other adults that I am establishing my museum recycling and transforming used materials into mysterious artefacts. I am delighted that its collection is continually growing."
The Museum of Unknown Civilizations (MUC) is to be found in the southern part of the Okanagan Valley in B.C. The building which houses the museum’s collection keeps on changing both its architectural shape as well as its actual location and, in this aspect, is related to mirages in the desert or castles in the air.

NOAA Members Wall
Margarita Alejandre: Diamond Back Mullet in Enlightenment
Gallery Vertigo Studio Artist, Margarita Alejandre is showing this recently completed piece on the NOAA Featured Members Wall.
Alejandre was born in Jasper, Alberta and moved to Vernon in 1991. Her artwork is a reflection of her love of the outdoors and travelling. From colouring on the walls when she was younger to drawings from dreams and memory, the artist's current work includes mixed media drawings and paintings of detailed flowers and abstract landscapes.
The boldness of the Diamond Black Mullet has intrigued the artist since her first encounter with this odd species a few years ago while she was living in Australia. While many other fish shy away from human encounters, the Diamond Back Mullet thrives on the interaction. Alejandre’s latest piece, Diamond Back Mullet in Enlightenment, exposes the rawness of this unusual fish. The warmth of the sun's rays intermingle with the flowing seaweed. The Diamond Back lifts up the sediment revealing the truth of the ocean; its beauty, its power, and its equilibrium. The fish in essence is in its purest form of enlightenment and highest level of fulfilment. It has attained a clear, meditative state.
“The mind is a powerful thing and Diamond Back Mullet in Enlightenment has been an exciting, creative, and imaginative process where my skills as an artist were put to the test and boundaries were non-existent” (Alejandre)
