Julie Wheelwright

Reading/Discussion at Gallery Vertigo
with International Journalist/Writer Julie Wheelwright

Wednesday, August 20th at 7pm

Hi there.  It's me again.  I was visiting with Kevin McPherson the other day and I was trying to imagine how I could apologize to you for sending you yet another announcement about an event I hope you can come to.  Kevin and I thought for a long time, but, aside from blaming him, we couldn't come up with anything.  But REALLY, this is going to be an exciting night, this Wednesday night, August 20th, at Gallery Vertigo at 7:00pm.  Canadian born Julie Wheelwright will be here to read and to discuss writing with other writers.  I really Do want everyone to know about this reading---just because it's the middle of the summer and so easy to miss---because (a) Julie is an excellent writer with loads of international experience, and (b) she's also a very nice, easy-to-meet person.  So please tell anyone you know who might not get this e-mail or read The Morning Star.

If you are free, we're going to have supper at The Italian Kitchen before the reading.  If you want to join us, just give me a call at 542 1785, or just show up.

Thanks,

John Lent

Catherine Wetmore

A Farewell Exhibition
Paintings by Catherine Wetmore

Wednesday, May 21st to Saturday, May 24th
Gallery Vertigo is proud to present this very special exhibition of works by local favourite and well-loved artist, Catherine Wetmore. The works shown will include selections from over the past 20 years of this prolific artist's work. Everyone is encouraged to attend during the four day exhibition to wish the artist farewell. Wetmore and her husband Douglas are soon leaving the Okanagan to return to the West Kootenays. This is also an ideal opportunity to purchase a work or to add to your collection of works by this accomplished artist.

Wetmore works in various materials including watercolour, acrylic and mixed media. Most of the work in this exhibition is framed or ready to hang, but will also include some unframed and matted pieces. Painting is the artist's primary interest and paintings will dominate this exhibition.

I love the physical act of painting. I love the messing with the various materials. The fun of creating an image that is satisfying formally and emotionally is the challenge. Knowing something of the history of art helps, though, because there is a huge body of art available for comparison and the struggle comes in deciding how well a work of art meets the criteria. (Wetmore)

Known for her energetic and abstracted land and sky forms, the artist's work expresses an appreciation of the land and a commitment to care of the environment.

My connection to the physical landscape is very strong. My early years were lived in mining camps in the wild and this has played a large part in my love of nature and my desire to try to recreate images that express this connection. (Wetmore)

Moon River - Catherine Wetmore

Wetmore came to Vernon from Vancouver, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at UBC in 1980. She painted and exhibited her work in a number of lower mainland galleries until moving to Vernon in 1993. Her paintings have also been exhibited in galleries throughout the Interior of British Columbia, including two exhibitions at the Vernon Art Gallery as well as galleries in Kaslo, Trail, and Grand Forks. Her work has been included in many group and juried exhibitions at Gallery Vertigo.

Not only an accomplished artist, Wetmore has also devoted much energy to the local arts community over the past 15 years. In the 1990's, the artist volunteered as a docent and in other capacities at the Vernon Public Art  Gallery. Since 2002, Catherine has been an active member of the North Okanagan Artists Alternative (NOAA) and was a studio artist at  Gallery Vertigo for three years. Since that time, she has served as a board member for the NOAA and has been actively involved in fundraising and other volunteer activities at Gallery Vertigo.

Catherine has been a tremendous supporter of the North Okanagan Artists Alternative, Gallery Vertigo and its goals. Champions of the arts and devoted volunteers such as Catherine Wetmore are very much responsible for the lively arts scene here in Vernon. She is also a talented artist and will be missed by the entire community. (Judith Jurica, Director, Gallery Vertigo)

Wetmore's art work is held in many private and public collections in Canada, the United States and Europe, including the permanent collection of the BC Assessment Authority in Victoria, the Richmond Art Gallery in Richmond BC, and in All Saints Anglican Church in Vernon. The artist's paintings are on display at the Odin Gallery on Silver Star Mountain, at Nadine's Fine Art and Supplies and in the Vernon Art Gallery's Art Rental program. The artist's work can also  be viewed on her website at  www.catherinewetmore.com
