Environmental Theatre comes to Gallery Vertigo!

“Say the Right Thing”

“Say the Right Thing” is written, directed and acted by Prodigy One a sub group of Prodigy Productions.  The troupe consists of Starling Taylor, Robyn Shanks, Jerry Graham, Alex Judd and Matt Brown. Acting mainly as a social commentary, “Say the Right Thing” is intended to deal with the divide between what we wish to say and what it is we are expected to say within the confines of our societal parameters.  Our goal with this piece is to expose the shocking distinction between the nature of our true thoughts and our actual outward projections within different everyday life situations, and how this discrepancy shapes our relationships and identities. Prodigy One has decided to collaborate with Gallery Vertigo to showcase this piece in an effort to support the artist run center and as a means of using their space as a venue in such a way that will generate exposure for community-based arts and entertainment.

The story takes on the format of “girl meets boy” and has a life like journey that most of us can relate to on one or more levels.  The difference here and how Prodigy One is able to take advantage of Theatre as a medium to tell this particular story is that there are actors playing the voices of the inner thoughts of the two main characters.  So, not only are we as an audience able to be there for the beginning of the story as a ‘fly on the wall’, we are able to be a part of and witness the characters’ inner thought processes.  The style of the show is done as an environmental theatrical piece which literally lets the audience get as close, physically, to each scene and the actors as they comfortably want.  And since the show moves from room to room for each scene, the audience is able to adjust their comfort level and their own physical placement each time a new scene starts.  It has been since the winter of 2006 when Prodigy Productions performed its original, “Holiday Conversations” that the company has done this style of theatre.

Early entries may be used for brochures and press, so artists are encouraged to complete their copies and submit them to the gallery as early as possible.
We are asking the artist to submit a small image of the work you copied and a brief(one paragraph) description along with the completed canvas.

FOR EXAMPLE:
This portrait titled Henry VIII by Hans Holbien was painted from life in about 1527.
This painting reflected a new type of work which acted as a form of propaganda to extol the Tudar dynasty.
This is your own work and so the signature on the piece should reflect this. No signatures of Picasso or Constable please! You may sign your pieces on the back if preferred (strongly recommended).
All works are donations to the gallery and will be auctioned at the end of the exhibition period by a qualified auctioneer to the highest bidder (no reserve bids).

ArtRUSH! Studio and Gallery Tour a success!

If you didn't experience the North Okanagan’s largest studio and gallery tour
you missed something special!

The North Okanagan's largest studio and gallery tour, organized by Gallery Vertigo, took place on May 15th and 16th between the hours of 10am and 4pm. The public was invited to support our artists and our artist-run centre by purchasing a passport and participating in a self-guided tour of the studios of many of the area’s brightest and most inspiring creators.

Passport holders experienced the full flavour of arts and culture in our region as some of the area's finest artists and arts institutions showed their hospitality with hands-on art making activities, demonstrations and refreshments offered at the many of stops on the tour. Gallery Vertigo also provided a free prize draw for studio tourists. Draw prizes included original artworks by Colleen Couves, a handknit scarf by Janet Armstrong, a free annual membership for the Vernon Public Art Gallery, a gift certificate from Nadine's Fine Art and Framing and a complete watercolour painting kit.

In many regions, artists are asked to pay for the priviledge of participating in such tours and the public attends free of charge. At Gallery Vertigo we thought that seemed backwards. The artists in our community deserve our support and we were certain that the citizens in our region would gladly pay a modest fee to enjoy the rare opportunity to visit artists where they work. This proved to be true as the event was a resounding success! The passports sold out as people clamoured for the opportunity to take part in the tour. We received rave reviews from both artists and visitors! We will definitely continue this as an annual event and would like to invite everyone to join in the fun next May.

The artists participating this year were: Theresa Heinrichs, Devon Muhlert, Dan Irvine, Holly Smith, Nadine Wilson (Nadine's Fine Art & Frames), Maureen Krause (Krause Jewellers), Daniel Stark, Kim Glowa, Shannon Marsh, Angela Broad and Colleen Couves (Caetani House), Maria Carolina Sanchez de Bustamante (Ashpa Naira Studio), Christine Kashuba, Cynthia Desnoyer, Mary Tremayne, Beryl Beaupre, the Gallery Vertigo Knitting Circle, and the Gallery Vertigo studio artists, Karen Meyer, Howard Brown, Starling Taylor, Catherine Steen, Joanne Pringle, Amber Powell, Michael Anderson, Melissa Merrill, Allison Griswold and Judith Jurica. The Vernon Community Arts Centre, the Vernon Public Art Gallery and Caetani House Society also opened their doors for the tour. Businesses on the tour included Nadine's Fine Art and Framing, Krause Jewellers, and Ashpa Naira Gallery.

THANKS!
Thank you to the many volunteers who made this event possible through the donation of their time and resources and talents.
In particular, thank you to Christine Kashuba for her tireless efforts in organizing this event.
Thank you to Amber Powell for countless hours required to design and produce the beautiful keepsake passport.
Thank you to all the participating artists and arts organizations.
Thank you to the Vernon Morning Star for their excellent coverage of our event.
And finally, a huge thank you to the Vernon community for your support and enthusiasm!" (Judith Jurica)
