Artist’s Statement

At Ashpa Naira, the visitor discovers a unique Art Experience. A space where Art, Design and everyday life come together. Visitors encounter the beauty and functionality of art in a Home environment, filled with original art work from artists and artisans, where guests of the gallery can learn, explore and appreciate Art, and find that unique gift or add to their art collection.

Also, visitors can experience the feeling of a working Studio, with art pieces in progress, in textile and architectural ceramics, where the artist/ gallery owner creates original design floors, fireplaces and murals.

A house feels a home when the space
is brought to life with the personal expression of those who live in it.

Biography

My name is Maria Carolina Sanchez de Bustamante, co-founder and owner of ASHPA NAIRA Gallery & Studio.

With a degree in Design and many years of experience in Textile and Ceramic Art in South America, I became interested in handmade tile and architectural ceramics, after arriving in Canada in 1989 and having the opportunity to learn more about the Arts and Crafts Movement in America and Europe.

Indeed the name ASHPA NAIRA is taken from the indigenous quechua language of the Incas and means "fired earth", which is exactly the process that transforms raw clay into ceramics.
